I'm a software engineer with 4 years at the BBC, working across Live Pages and the Participation & Gamification team. I lead cross-functional epics end-to-end — from architecture and stakeholder alignment through to production — and act as a go-to technical authority for Live & Interactive Experiences.

Beyond shipping features, I mentor engineers on TypeScript and React patterns, establish technical documentation for new codebases, and participate in the BBC Security Champions network, including threat modelling and application security reviews.

As epic lead, I oversaw the end-to-end delivery of Live Comments — a feature enabling audiences to post and view real-time comments directly on BBC live pages. This brought a new layer of interactivity to live news and sport coverage, allowing readers to engage with unfolding stories as they happen.

Leading the epic involved coordinating across multiple teams, defining the technical approach, and contributing directly to the front-end implementation using React and TypeScript. The feature required careful consideration of moderation, accessibility, and performance at BBC scale.

Predict Branding A/B Test

This project involved implementing an A/B test on the BBC Sport Predictor to evaluate the impact of different visual branding approaches on user engagement. Using Optimizely as the experimentation platform, distinct branding variants were served to different user groups to measure which design best drove participation.

Key work included integrating Optimizely view and click events with user attributes, implementing event naming conventions for experimentation tracking, and wiring ATI analytics events alongside Optimizely events. Extensive debugging ensured events fired correctly on page load and user interaction, with coverage for edge cases where user data was absent or undefined.

By streamlining the feedback process, the solution encourages audience participation and fosters a more interactive relationship between users and editors. Submitted comments are securely transmitted and can be reviewed by editorial staff for potential inclusion or response during live coverage.

BBC Live Match Page

Built the BBC Sport Live Match page — a dedicated page for following sporting events in real time. The page surfaces live scores, match commentary, statistics, and team information via a tabbed interface, updating dynamically throughout the match.

Implemented in React with TypeScript for type safety across a complex, data-driven component tree, ensuring the page remained responsive and maintainable across desktops, tablets, and mobile.

BBC Fixtures Page

This project focused on developing a comprehensive and up-to-date Football Fixtures page using JavaScript, React, TypeScript, and cloud services from Amazon Web Services (AWS). The goal was to provide football fans with a central location to access upcoming and past match information, live scores, and detailed statistics.

The development team utilized JavaScript for various functionalities throughout the BBC Football Fixtures page. Features like filtering fixtures by competition, date, or team, along with displaying past scores and key match statistics, relied on JavaScript for smooth operation.

React, a popular JavaScript library, played a crucial role in creating a dynamic and responsive user experience. The project prioritized well-structured and documented code using JavaScript and React best practices, along with TypeScript for type safety. This approach facilitated future maintenance and feature additions.

A key aspect of the project involved integrating with AWS services. This involved leveraging AWS serverless computing solutions like AWS Lambda to process incoming data feeds from a data provider like OPTA. OPTA, a leading sports data provider, provides real-time and historical football match data. The processed data, containing live scores and match updates, would then be used by the JavaScript code to dynamically update the BBC Football Fixtures page, ensuring fans have access to the most recent information.

This successful implementation using JavaScript, React, TypeScript, and AWS services delivered a user-friendly, informative, and up-to-date BBC Football Fixtures page within a dynamic and interactive web experience.
